Webmaster’s Note: These are the exact minutes of the first meeting of our chapter. The hand-written record is on page 1 of the original ledger book held in the NSDAR records room of the Brumback Library in Van Wert, Ohio, written July 17, 1911, author unknown.
“The organizing regent was Miss Corrine Metz on July 17, 1911, when the Van Wert, Ohio group of 20 ladies met to have their very first meeting of the Isaac Van Wart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, NSDAR.
The name and Patriot was discussed and approved. Mrs. Harriet Hall met with them, as the paperwork had been approved by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, NSDAR. Miss Grace Hall made the motion, seconded by Miss Wayland Purmort for Miss Corrine Metz to become the first Regent. The rest of the Officers were chosen: vice regent was Mrs. Roxana Allen who declined and Saida Autrium (editor’s note: we believe she accepted); secretary was Miss Jessie Hall; treasurer was Mrs. Flora Gilliland; historian was Miss Ellen Purmort; and Registrar was Miss Alice Carwoody. Committees were formed.
The Hetuck Chapter of the DAR, NSDAR, in Newark sent welcome greetings through Mrs. Metz, a member. Charter members included: Mrs. Corinne Metz; Mrs. Eva Butler; Miss Alice Carwoody; Mrs. Hazel Clark; Miss Olga Burgoon; Miss Greta Bergoon; Mrs. Flora Gilliland; Mrs. Harriet Hall; Miss Jessie Hall; Miss Grace Hall; Miss Erisia Hall; Mrs. Roxana Priddy; Mrs. Estella Reed; Mrs. Edna Webster; Miss Charlotte Hamilton; Miss Wayland Purmort; Miss Ellen Purmort; Mrs Sarah Olner; Mrs. Sarah Wert. The latter two ladies, on behalf of the group, applied for membership in the National Chapter, NSDAR.
Three Northwest Ohio Counties bear the names of the Patriots, Isaac Van Wart, David Williams and John Paulding who were the captors of the British spy Major John Andre at Tarrytown, NY on September 23, 1780. Andre, in collusion with General Benedict Arnold, a traitor to the American Revolution, planned to betray the West Point Fort in New York, when the three captors saved the day by resisting temptation and delivering Andre to Patriot officials.
